Belinda Newick

portrait of Belinda Newick

Belinda is a jewellery teacher at Melbourne Polytechnic and a practising contemporary jeweller.  She maintains a diverse practice as a studio based jeweller, independent curator and educator, teaching at Melbourne Polytechnic in the Advanced Diploma and Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design.

Her teaching practice collaborates to provide both practical and theoretical opportunities for learning and teaching innovation in design and making.  Newick has been the recipient of two international grants, an Asialink Residency in Sri Lanka 2004 and another in Kerala, India 2001. She exhibits nationally and in Asia, New Zealand and the USA.

Becoming a teacher after working as an artist was a natural progression for Belinda, an opportunity to give back and to educate the next generation of makers. Developing and improving student learning and curriculum is paramount to her teaching practice. Valuing creative practice and materiality motivates her to help students find and develop their own creative expression. Her professional work maintains the technical skills and knowledge that she demonstrates in her teaching, whilst her teaching keeps her connected to developing jewellers and metalsmiths. Belinda shares her industry connections with her students. This shows students that she has industry currency and exposes students to the professional standard of work required in the contemporary industry.

Belinda completed a Bachelor of Arts in Jewellery and 3d Design at Curtin University in 1995, followed by a Design Associateship in the Metal Design Studio at JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design. She has been the recipient of two international grants, an Asialink Residency in Sri Lanka 2004 and another in Kerala, India 2001. She exhibits nationally and in Asia, New Zealand and the USA. Currently Belinda has curated a nationally touring group exhibition Island Welcome and is studying a Master of Creative Industries at Melbourne Polytechnic. Belinda is a finalist in the 2019 Victorian Craft Awards.
