If you are a person with an intellectual disability, autism or cognitive impairment Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate I in Work Education 22566VIC (General Stream) will help you find your path to your dream career. Work education courses help build confidence and skills for entering the workforce. You’ll learn in the classroom and on the job through work placement. You’ll learn vocational and job-seeking skills as part of your individualised program. Personal management, teamwork and communication skills will help your future in the workforce.
Melbourne Polytechnic leads the education sector in experience and innovation for transition and work education. In 2023 & 2018, we won ‘Inclusive Training Provider’ in the Department of Education’s Victorian Training Awards (VTA), and in 2024 Melbourne Polytechnic won the large training provider of the year. You can choose from vocational electives including clerical, multimedia, introduction to trades, horticulture, introduction to hospitality, retail, performing arts and warehouse/packing. Plus, all students have the opportunity to gain real-life experience before they graduate, with 300 hours of practical placement, followed by an evaluation to determine your strengths and future goals. You’ll benefit from real-life interactions with Darebin City Council, Consumer Affairs Victoria, Metro Trains Community Education Unit, Ambulance, Police and Fire Services and the TREV Sports Tournament. The course also includes three workshops for Parents as Career Partners.
At Melbourne Polytechnic, our qualified careers advisors and teachers will develop an individualised program to meet your interests and goals. We’ll work with you, your family and advocate or carer to create an individual learning plan based on your needs and goals so you can learn at your own pace. Best of all, your class will have a maximum of ten students to ensure you have you have an individualised program in a caring and supportive environment.

You may be assessed using an integrated approach. Learning outcomes may be grouped together and assessment of the module achieved through an activity that takes into account of all learning outcomes. Assessment methods will respect your individual learning style and may include discussion, demonstration, oral questioning, short answer, practical exercise, role play, recorded report and observation. The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:
Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.
In the Kitchen Operations short courses, students will learn how to stock a pantry with cooking essentials and prepare simple nutritious meals on a budget. Students will also develop awareness of food hygiene and safety practices in a commercial kitchen.
Applicants to complete a Work Education program application for interview form, which will be followed by an interview.

Applicants for this program will have a disability, e.g. Intellectual Disability, Autism, Acquired Brain Injury (ABI).
Work Education students are required to complete and return an application form and attend an informal interview to find the best suited class and discuss any additional requirements that may be needed to support studies. All future students who have submitted an application will be contacted via email to schedule the interview between August and December.
Students will need to also organise a Unique Student Identifier (USI) if they don't have one. This can be done online. Please bring this along to the interview session with any other documents and identification required which will be outlined to you in the email.
