Glass is being utilised more in the built environment than ever before, and there is enormous potential to create innovative and contemporary uses of designed glazing, particularly as a contemporary architectural element.
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate IV in Glass and Glazing MSF40422 qualification provides a career pathway by building on glass skills previously acquired, and adding in specific business skills to the practical skill and design base. It progresses the professional development of the glazing and designed glazing sectors by providing a qualification which trains a glass artist, maker or practitioner to develop both their glass practice and their business skills to a level which will enable them to work in the sector in a leading role or develop their own business to a professional level, thus adding to the level of competency and skill available in the glass sector.
Combine the practical and the creative
Melbourne Polytechnic has developed this unique course in association with Glaas Inc, a not-for-profit organisation which promotes the use of glass in art, architecture and construction. This association ensures support and opportunities for Melbourne Polytechnic students learning and working in designed glazing throughout Australia.
The units included in the Certificate IV in Glass and Glazing MSF40422 were chosen to:
- further develop the practical skills acquired in the Certificate III in Glass and Glazing MSF30422 (or from experience);
- progress these glass skills into the development of a business or practice; or to take into the workforce of the sector in a leading role in a glass or related business;
- train practitioners/artists and makers in business skills relevant to the glass sector;
- develop an understanding of the requirement in the sector for raised awareness and knowledge of glass conservation, Australian Standards and building compliance.

Fees displayed are effective for new applications received on or after 1st of November. Tuition fees do not include textbooks, course materials or overseas student health insurance and visa fees.
After initial deposit, international students are able to pay tuition fees in installments, four times per year.

Concession fees are charged at 20 per cent of the standard fees for enrolments in Certificate I to IV courses. To be eligible students must meet Skills First eligibility criteria and present a valid:
- Commonwealth Health Care card, or
- Pensioner Concession card, or
- Any dependent spouse or dependent child of one of the above cardholders, or
- Veterans Gold card.
The following groups are eligible for concession fees from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma level:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Asylum Seekers and victims of human trafficking
Additional expenses
The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:
- $250 for full fee-paying students; and
- $175 for concession-paying students studying Certificate I, II, III, or IV.
Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.
